Former Vice-President Dick Cheney to vote for Kamala Harris

Former US Vice President Dick Cheney, a lifelong Republican, has announced he will support Democrat Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election this November.

Cheney, known for his influential role during George W. Bush’s presidency, stated there has "never been an individual who poses a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump," referring to the current Republican candidate.

Liz Cheney, his daughter and former Republican lawmaker, had already revealed her father's decision at an event in Texas, saying he intended to back the Democratic nominee. Cheney criticized Trump, stating, "He [Trump] attempted to steal the last election through lies and violence to stay in power after the voters rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again."

Cheney emphasized the importance of placing the country above party lines to protect the Constitution. "As citizens, we all have a duty to defend our Constitution over partisanship, which is why I will be voting for Vice President Kamala Harris," he explained.

Harris's campaign welcomed Cheney’s endorsement. Jen O’Malley Dillon, Harris's campaign chair, said, “The Vice President is honored to have the support of Vice President Cheney and admires his courage in putting country over party.”

Cheney's stance aligns him with a growing number of Republicans who have voiced concerns about Trump’s candidacy. Liz Cheney, who served on the House committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riots, also supports Vice President Harris. She was one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump following the incident. In 2022, she lost her seat in Congress to a candidate endorsed by Trump.

Following Cheney’s statement, Trump responded on social media, labeling the former vice president an "irrelevant RINO" (Republican in name only) and calling him the "King of Endless, Nonsensical Wars," in reference to Cheney's involvement in the Iraq War.
